Shaping The Future of Mobility: Student Life at MOIA
by Dennis Limani and Patricia Fernandez
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a working student or intern in a mobility tech company? If so, keep reading to hear what our student community has to say.
At MOIA, we believe that autonomous ridepooling can make our cities better, safer and more beautiful places to live in. Our student community is an important part of this journey. This community consists of a diverse group of curious minds, who are motivated and always eager to learn new things. There are approx. 25 people, living in Hamburg and Berlin, supporting MOIA’s mission. We foster a vibrant community by organizing monthly coffee chats and quarterly in-person meetings to facilitate valuable exchanges.
As a Working Student or Intern, you will be working on challenging projects with high impact (meaning you are not expected to get coffee for your team). You work closely together with your team, who will help you to identify project goals, while also inspiring and mentoring you, supporting your professional development.
We asked some of our students to share their experiences. Let’s start with achievements:
Moritz (Working Student CRM) — “I expanded our analysis of customer retention feedback, uncovering new insights. Additionally, conceptualizing a mailing campaign and watching it come to life.”
Louisa (Working Student UX Research) — “I helped to shape the user experience on something novel that could lead the way for the future of mobility in Germany.”
Yanxi (Working Student iOS Engineering) — “I contributed to components and features that are widely used in the passenger app. It’s especially rewarding when I book a ride using the MOIA app and see my work come to life.”
Lena (Working Student Cyber Security) — “I figured out how to integrate fuzz testing into our codebase. I’ve never done that before with such a big software project and it felt really good when it finally worked.”
We are excited about the impact they have made so far on their respective teams at MOIA. As they reflected, we found out that with achievements also came learnings. Here is what they each had to say:
Moritz (Working Student CRM) — “Engaging with my colleagues, addressing and learning from mistakes, have greatly enhanced my understanding of teamwork, quality control, and effective communication. On the technical side, handling, organizing, and presenting data has been crucial. Navigating the vast array of data and KPIs within CRM.”
Louisa (Working Student UX Research) — “I learned how to work with an enabling team that juggles multiple topics at the same time. And how to do a lot of deep discovery research on different topics.”
Yanxi (Working Student iOS Engineering) — “I gained valuable knowledge in iOS development, including expertise in Swift and UIKit. I also learned how we can efficiently manage and iterate on projects, which is important to deliver high-quality mobile applications.”
Lena (Working Student Cyber Security) — “I’ve already learned a lot! I got more into C++ and realized that I like CMake much better than Make.
I’m learning how it feels to work with a complex infrastructure and that whenever you understood one part of it, you find five new things that you’ve never heard of in the process.”
Of course, it’s not just about accomplishments and lessons learned — it’s also about enjoying the journey and creating a positive work environment that leads to unforgettable moments. Our students shared some of their favorite experiences, “from on-site team days to after-work shuffleboard at a local bar, and even taking a tour of our hub to try out an autonomous vehicle!”
All in all, the students shared several insights into their life as a student at MOIA and we are incredibly proud to have such an engagement and contribution from our community. The concept of helping each other to gain knowledge from more experienced employees, but also getting valuable support from the students is a give and take. We love to see the responsibilities that our students get, but also take to contribute to our mission to bring autonomous ride pooling to Europe!
